Tarta de Flan

Flan is a Spanish dessert which is similar to a custard tart or pudding. It is made with milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract and flour, and is cooked in a baking dish or tin. Flan can be served hot or cold, and is often served with a fruit sauce or caramel sauce.

1 litre milk

6 eggs

250g sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

50g flour

Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius.

In a large saucepan, heat the milk until it is just below boiling point.

In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar and vanilla extract.

Gradually add the milk to the egg mixture, whisking constantly.

Add the flour and mix until smooth.

Pour the mixture into a baking dish or tin and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the flan is set and golden brown.

Potential changes & improvements

Flan can be made with different types of milk, such as almond milk or coconut milk.

You can use different flavourings in the flan, such as chocolate, coffee or liqueurs.

The caramel sauce can be made with different types of sugar, such as brown sugar or palm sugar.

What other food it works well with

Flan can be served with a variety of fruits, such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or mango.

It can also be served with a variety of sauces, such as chocolate sauce, coffee sauce or caramel sauce.

Common Mistakes

When making flan, it is important to whisk the eggs and sugar together until they are pale and creamy. If the mixture is not whisked enough, the flan will be dense and not light and fluffy.

Another common mistake is to overcook the flan. The flan should be set but still slightly jiggly in the middle. If it is overcooked, it will be dry and crumbly.

Nutritional Information

Flan is high in calories and fat, and so should be eaten in moderation.
