Tarta de Manzana

This Spanish classic is a must-try for any apple lover! A sweet and crumbly pastry base is filled with delicious apple slices, before being baked to perfection. Serve with a dollop of cream or custard for a truly indulgent treat.


  • 300g plain flour
  • 100g ground almonds
  • 150g caster sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 225g cold unsalted butter, diced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6-8 apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon


  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/375°F/Gas Mark 5.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, ground almonds, sugar, baking powder and salt.
  3. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  4. Beat together the egg and vanilla extract, and add to the mixture, stirring until it forms a soft dough.
  5. Press two-thirds of the dough into the base of a 23cm/9in pie dish.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix together the apples, lemon juice and cinnamon.
  7. Spread the apple mixture over the pastry base.
  8. Roll out the remaining pastry to a thickness of 5mm/1/4in and use to top the pie.
  9. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes, or until the pastry is golden-brown and the apples are cooked.
  10. Serve warm with cream or custard.

For a more indulgent treat, you could try adding a layer of caramelised onions under the apple filling. Alternatively, try using different types of apples for a more unique flavour.
