Sangria

Sangria is a refreshing and popular Spanish drink, typically made with wine, fruit juices, and diced fruit. It’s perfect for summer entertaining and can be easily adapted to suit your own taste.

Ingredients:

1 bottle of red wine

1 cup fruit juice (orange juice is traditional, but you can use any type of juice)

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 orange, sliced

1 lemon, sliced

1 lime, sliced

1/2 cup chopped fruit (apples, strawberries, peaches, etc.)

Optional: 1/4 cup brandy

Method:

1. Combine the wine, fruit juice, sugar, and cinnamon in a large pitcher.

2. Add the orange, lemon, and lime slices, and chopped fruit.

3. If using, add the brandy.

4. Stir well and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight.

5. Serve over ice, with additional sliced fruit for garnish, if desired.

Potential changes & improvements:

-If you want a sweeter sangria, you can add more sugar to taste.

-For a less sweet version, use less sugar or substitute with a sugar-free sweetener.

-To make a white sangria, simply use a white wine in place of the red wine.

-If you don’t have any fruit juice on hand, you can use sparkling water or seltzer water in place of the juice.

-For a lower calorie sangria, use a diet fruit juice and/or sparkling water.

Works Well With…

Sangria is typically served as an accompaniment to a meal. It pairs well with Spanish dishes such as paella, tapas, and seafood.

Common Mistakes:

-Adding too much sugar. Remember that the fruit juice and wine are already sweet, so you don’t need to add a lot of sugar. Start with the amount listed in the recipe, and then add more to taste.

-Not refrigerating the sangria for long enough. This is a key step in order to allow the flavors to meld together. Be sure to refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight.

-Not using fresh fruit. The fresh fruit is what gives sangria its flavor, so be sure to use fresh oranges, lemons, and limes. If you don’t have any fresh fruit on hand, you can use frozen fruit.
