Sweet and Sour Sauce

This classic Chinese sauce is perfect for sweet and sour pork or chicken. It’s easy to make at home, and much healthier than the store-bought version.

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup water

1. In a small saucepan, combine sugar, vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce, cornstarch, salt, ginger, and garlic. Stir in water.

2. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 3 minutes, or until sauce is thickened.

What other food it works well with

Sweet and sour sauce is delicious with pork, chicken, or shrimp. It’s also great on rice or noodles.

Common Mistakes

Be sure to stir the sauce constantly while it’s boiling, or it will stick to the pan and burn.
