Cherry Chipotle Sauce

This cherry chipotle sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. It’s great on chicken, fish, or pork, and can be easily made in under 30 minutes. Just a few simple ingredients and you’ll have a delicious, homemade sauce that will elevate your meals to the next level.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (250 ml) cherry juice
  • 1 Chipotle pepper in adobo sauce, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp. (15 ml) honey
  • 1 tbsp. (15 ml) apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp. (5 ml) smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp. (1 ml) ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp. (1 ml) garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Method

  1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring cherry juice to a simmer.
  2. Add the chopped chipotle pepper, honey, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Stir to combine.
  3. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until sauce has thickened slightly. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving.

This sauce is best served warm, but can also be served at room temperature or cold. It will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Potential changes & improvements

If you want a less spicy sauce, you can omit the chipotle pepper or use only half of one. For a sweeter sauce, add a little more honey. And for a tangier sauce, add a bit more apple cider vinegar.

What other food it works well with

This sauce is great on chicken, fish, or pork. Try it on grilled or roasted chicken, baked salmon, or pork chops. It would also be delicious on roasted vegetables or as a dipping sauce for appetizers.

Common Mistakes

When cooking the sauce, be sure to simmer it over medium heat and not boil it. Boiling the sauce will make it too thick and reduce the sweetness of the cherries. Also, be sure to let the sauce cool slightly before serving, as the heat from the chipotle pepper can be quite intense.
