Flan

Introduction

Flan is a type of custard dessert which is very popular in Spain and many Latin American countries. It is made with eggs, milk, sugar, and often flavoured with vanilla. Flan is usually baked in a round, shallow dish and then inverted onto a plate so that the caramel sauce runs down the sides.

Ingredients

– 6 eggs
– 500ml milk
– 150g sugar
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 160C.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla extract.

3. Pour the mixture into a round, shallow dish.

4. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes, or until the custard is set.

5. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly.

6. Invert onto a plate and serve.

Potential changes & improvements

– For a richer Flan, you could use cream instead of milk.
– You could add some fruit to the Flan, such as berries or diced peaches.
– Instead of vanilla extract, you could use other flavourings such as almond extract or orange blossom water.

What other food it works well with

Flan goes well with many other desserts, such as ice cream, fresh fruit, or cake.

Common Mistakes

– One common mistake when making Flan is to not whisk the eggs thoroughly enough. This can result in a lumpy custard.
– Another mistake is to overcook the Flan, which will make it dry and crumbly.
