Montaditos are small Spanish bites, traditionally made with a crusty baguette, topped with a variety of ingredients. The most popular montadito is the Montadito de Jamón, made with Spanish ham, Manchego cheese and olive oil.
Ingredients
-1 baguette
-60g Spanish ham
-30g Manchego cheese
-1 tbsp olive oil
-1 clove of garlic
Method
1. Preheat your oven to 200C.
2. Cut the baguette into small, bite-sized pieces.
3. Top each piece of bread with a slice of ham and a piece of cheese.
4. Drizzle olive oil over the top of each montadito.
5. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes, until the bread is crispy and the cheese is melted.
6. Rub a clove of garlic over the top of each montadito and enjoy!
Potential changes & improvements
-Try using a different type of cheese, such as Iberico or Tetilla cheese.
-Add some green peppers or olives for extra flavour.
-For a vegetarian version, replace the ham with roasted vegetables.
What other food it works well with
-Montaditos are traditionally served as an appetizer or a snack.
-They can also be served as part of a larger Spanish-themed meal, alongside dishes such as Paella or Tortilla Española.
Common Mistakes
-Not using a crusty baguette. The crusty texture of the bread is essential for a good montadito.
-Not using enough olive oil. The olive oil adds flavour and helps to keep the bread crispy.
-Not rubbing the garlic clove over the montaditos before serving. This step may seem optional, but it really does make a difference!
