Creamed Spinach with Gruyere Cheese


This creamy spinach dish is full of flavour and makes a great side to any meal. It’s also really easy to make!


• 1kg spinach

• 500g Gruyere cheese, grated

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 onion, diced

• 1 tbsp flour

• 1 cup milk

• 1 tsp salt

• 1/4 tsp black pepper


1. In a large pot, cook the spinach over medium heat until it wilts.

2. Add the garlic, onion, and flour, and cook for 1 more minute.

3. Stir in the milk and cheese, and season with salt and pepper.

4. Cook until the cheese is melted and the sauce is thickened.

Potential changes & improvements

• If you want a richer dish, you could use cream instead of milk.

• You could also add some nutmeg for an extra depth of flavour.

• For a bit of a crunch, you could stir in some bread crumbs before serving.

• Not cooking the spinach long enough – make sure to cook it until it’s completely wilted.
